What Do We Do?

Network Russia works with Scout groups and organisations in Russia to help support and encourage Scouting in line with WOSM recommendations. Most of this work comes to fruition when we get together with our Russian friends of which you can find-out more below.

My Visit to Russia

My Scout Leader, Paul Findley, asked me if I would like to visit Russia with the scouts. There were four leaders going, Paul and Jo Findley, Mary Bratley and Steve Parker and three other children, Richard Leivers, James Buckingham and Alex Murphy. We met at Jo and Paul's house at 3:30 a.m. and went in a minibus to Manchester Airport picking up the others from Rotherham on the way. We flew from Manchester to Frankfurt in Germany where we spent six hours reading books, sleeping and listening to music while we waited for our plane to St. Petersburg.

It was brilliant in Russia; we spent one week camping with other Russian Scouts. In that week we did many activities with the other Scouts such as rafting and volleyball. We also went on a three-day boat trip around a Lake that we swam in everyday. The food we ate was cooked on an open fire and was mainly soup with potatoes and meat in it.

After the first week we spent another week in home hospitality. I went to Serge's house, who was one of the Russians we camped with. We visited many of the sites in St. Petersburg; they were all amazing especially the cathedrals and churches, which were very colourful on the outside, but the inside was even better with many beautiful paintings which were all very detailed. My favourite place that we visited was Peterhof palace, which had lots of beautiful fountains in the gardens. The rooms in the palace were beautiful with amazing pictures and lots of gold leaf on the walls and ceiling. The night before we came home we went to watch a Russian ballet called Sleeping Beauty. After the ballet we went on a midnight coach tour to see the night sites and bridges around St Petersburg open and close this took five hours from midnight to 5:00 a.m.

I really enjoyed going to Russia and was exhausted when I got home. The whole trip was a great experience for me and I would love to go again.
