MIA Orphanage Service Project

Tula Orphanage Visit (2007)

On 16th August 2007 a team of members from Network Russia Scout Fellowship and Explorer/Network Scouts set out to visit Moscow and then travel south to the Tula region of Russia where Multi-International Aid operate an orphanage which is in urgent need of some re-furbishment. Once in Russia, the team joined by some Russian Scouts who will work alongside the UK members on this project.

The visit to Tula is the second visit that Network Russia Scout Fellowship has made to help renovate orphanages in Russia. In 2005 a successful visit was made to the orphanage at Kolichev, south of Moscow, which again consisted of a mixture of Network Russia members and Explorer/Network Scouts.

The Tula orphanage is situated some four hours south of Moscow by fast train. If you want to see the countryside and travel a little slower, the slow train will get you there in about eight hours, but we are more concerned about getting there, fast, so we will visit the sights of Moscow first, meet our Russian Scouts who are joining us, and then ‘whiz-off’ to Tula. These orphanages are occupied by the Russian Street Children and provide safe refuges for these orphans. For more information on the Street Children of Russia, contact any Network member or use the ‘contact us’ link on the web site.

During the visit we installed safe power supplies to the laundry and kitchen areas, together with a large redecorating project in the main assembly hall. This will enable the charity managing the orphanage, to install washing machines and new kitchen ranges which are urgently needed at the orphanage.

Once we completed the work at the orphanage, we returned, via fast train!, to St. Petersburg, via Moscow, on an overnight sleeper train. Once in St. Petersburg, we met up with Russian Leaders there and visit the wonderous sights of the city including the summer palace at Peterhof, a night trip on the river to see the illuminated bridges opening, and the multitude of historic buildings that go to make St. Petersburg such a cultural city to visit.
